In March 2004, the Japanese forward became the youngest player ever to suit up in Japan's J-League when he made his debut for Tokyo Verdy 1969 at the age 15 years, 10 months. Less than two months later, two days before his 16th birthday, he added his name to the history books again, becoming the youngest player in league history to score a goal. Not surprisingly, he was named 2004 J-League Young Player of the Year.
Sicilian survival
In July 2006, Tokyo Verdy agreed to a one-year loan for Morimoto with Italian Serie A club Calcio Catania, currently managed by Italian goalkeeping great Walter Zenga. His Serie A debut, in January 2007, started glowingly, as he came on as a substitute in the 83rd minute and scored his first goal before the final whistle. Unfortunately, he ruptured the ACL in his left knee in March and missed the rest of the 2006-07 season, as Catania finished 13th. Despite that injury, the Sicilian club recognized Morimoto's great potential and signed him to a new contract in June 2007. In the 2007-08 Serie A season, he played 14 games and scored one goal, as Catania barely survived relegation to Serie B by finishing 17th.
